BATAVIA EXCITED. Batavia is agitated over an order of the department changing the name of that P.O. to Greenland, in honor, we presume, of Hiram GREENLAND, who was postmaster there for nearly a quarter of a century, and whose daughter how has the office.
The fact that the states of Iowa and Illinois each have a Batavia, and that this is against the prompt delivery of the mails, is the reason assigned for the change of name. A remonstrance has been forwarded to the department, the signers holding that re-christening a town as old as Batavia is much against the best interests of the community.
Unless the department recalls the order the place will be known as Greenland after July 1st, and the railroad company will also adopt the new name.
