"During the first enlistment he was marched to Boston and was in several small skirmishes, in that quarter, and thence to Long island, New York, where we had a small engagement, then his first enlistment expired, and during his second enlistment, he with many others were captured at Fort Washington on York island in '76 and confined in an old sugar house (without sugar), about the eleventh day after said confinement he, this deponent, climbd (sic) out a back window on the top of a shed and escaped the sentry, and went thro new york and got a canoe and landed near Fort Lee, and went to join the army but first thing this affiant saw on his rout (sic) was the British pursuing Genl. Washington & by pretending to be of new york and a labourer out of employ & soforth, he got clear by turning out of the way and getting to Toppaune, New Jersey, commended by Major Clark, who gave him a letter to Genl. Washington then about Trenton, as supposed, and commanded him to sew it up in lining of jacket and told him how to act - he set out and arrived at the Camp of General Washington at Princeton, and after giving the letter to the General this affiant was ordered to join the army which he did at Trenton, and was in battle at Trenton, Monmouth, and from thence ordered up the Susquehanna to Shemokin, and was in that quarter the summer and until late in the fall, and then ordered to the South to join the army commanded by Genl. Green(e), but in the meantime this affiant's term of enlistment expired, and he immediately re-enlisted at Trenton after said summer & fall expedition with Genl. Sullivan up said river, the third time; for three years or during the war, in same Corps in Captain Long's Company, Eleventh Virginia Regiment commanded by Colonel Trammel, and served in southern department, until peace.
