JOHNSON to be inducted into Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame

The Late Doug JOHNSON was a 4-H supporter.

Doug JOHNSON will posthumously be inducted into the 2008 Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame during a 3:30 p.m. ceremony Sunday at the Iowa State Fair 4-H Exhibit Building. His wife Lynne will accept a plaque presented by the Iowa 4-H Foundation as he is introduced on stage.

Eight-two Iowa counties are participating this year and have selected inductees for their outstanding service and dedication to 4-H.

JOHNSON's contribution to 4-H in Jefferson County was widely felt. He most recently was a member and driving force of the Jefferson County Fair Board. As a beef superintendent, he helped promote and grow the beef program in Jefferson County.

One of his favorite subjects was the bucket/bottle calf program. JOHNSON spent a great amount of time and care with younger 4-H members and their bottle calves, giving them advice, sharing his knowledge and encouraging them.

Jefferson County extension staff said JOHNSON was a pleasure to work with, an invaluable source of knowledge and experience and a sincere and genuine person; his guidance and influence is still felt in Jefferson County, and he is truly and deeply missed.

JOHNSON, a life-long resident of the Fairfield community, passed away July 26, 2007.

Hall of Fame inductees are selected by counties for the exceptional work in contributing to the lives of 4-H members and the overall 4-H program. Many inductees served as club leaders, youth mentors, fair superintendents or fair board members, extension council members, county youth council members, fair judges, financial supporters, chaperones or Iowa State University Extension staff members. The inductees have demonstrated dedication, encouragement, commitment and guidance to Iowa's 4-H'ers through the years.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for the counties and state to recognize and celebrate 4-H volunteers and staff who have shown outstanding service and dedication to Iowa's 4-H program," said Chuck Morris, ISU Extension 4-H Youth Development director.

The Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame was initiated in 2002 to help commemorate the 100th anniversary of 4-H.
