Doug JOHNSON Remembered
Story by Lacey Jacobs, Ledger staff writer

Kind, generous, respectful, dedicated and hardworking are just a few of the words Jefferson County Fair Board members offered to describe Doug JOHNSON during a tribute Wednesday evening at the fair.

A memorial picnic table in JOHNSON's honor will ensure his 37 years of service to the fair board are never forgotten.

JOHNSON, a life-long resident of the Fairfield community, passed away July 26. He had been active in 4-H and FFA, had served on the Jefferson County Hospital Board of Trustees and was a member of Pork Producers and Beef Producers.

"He was a great asset to the fair, and the kids loved him," fair board president Steve Fritchen said. During Wednesday's tribute, the fair board fondly remembered how JOHNSON's love for farming began at an early age and how the tilt of his hat indicated his mood.

"Doug's been around for a long time, and this table and bench will be around for a long time," said Penn Workers 4-H leader Everett Lacey. Lacey spearheaded the project to raise funds for the bench and get it placed in the Jefferson County Fairgrounds' Butterfly Garden, south of the Activity Building.

During the fair, JOHNSON spent a lot of his time between the cattle and dairy barns, and he could sometimes be found sitting in the shade under a tree between the two, Lacey explained. Now a table near there in JOHNSON's honor will give others a nice shady spot to sit and relax.

Local 4-H clubs and the fair board kicked in $1,500 to purchase the bench made by Fairfield Precast Concrete, which donated the time to install the table. The cement on which the table sits was donated by Ideal Ready Mix Company, Inc.

A plaque for the memorial picnic table has yet to be installed.
