Fairfield Republican; Fairfield, Jefferson, Iowa; January 8, 1909

At the residence of Charles Crane in Round Prairie Township at 6:30 p.m., Dec. 31st, occurred the marriage of Frank L. Jackson, of Van Buren Co., to Miss Elise Crane of Jefferson Co. Mr. Jackson had an unusual experience in his effort to secure a wife. Arriving in Fairfield Wednesday evening he put up at the hotel on Broadway. At 5:30 he was routed out by an alarm of fire. He hurried from his room leaving his coat and vest, which he recovered later. At 2:00 p.m. in company with another party he started for the Crane residence a distance of 13 miles. When within two miles of Glasgow he met a traction engine. The horses became frightened, climbed a steep bank, the buggy was overturned, the occupants hurled to the ground without ceremony. Mr. Jackson clung to the lines and was dragged about forty yards, when the horse stopped. The buggy was so damaged it must be left. In reply to a telephone call of distress a rescuing party started out, but getting on the wrong road, two of us were left to carry two large suitcases with other equipment necessary at weddings and trudge the balance of the way 3 1/2 miles on foot.
