"Jefferson County Republican", Sept. 15, 1905, Pg. 5, Col. 3

Monday we went out to the old home of the late Daniel MENDENHALL, who came to this county in 1842 and built his first house, a log cabin, on the lot where the Presbyterian Church now stands. A log jail was also built just across the street where C. D LEGGETT's house now stands, or near where it stands. Mr. MENDENHALL was a gunsmith and worked with Mr. BYRKITT. He was sheriff of the county and in 1856 built the MENDENHALL residence several blocks west of the gas factory, on West Burlington Street, now occupied by his daughter, Mrs. C. F. GEORGE. The house is certainly one of the most conveniently arranged dwellings we know of in the city, has 13 rooms well lit now with electric lights and all the conveniences...

The joists in this building were made from the logs used in the old log jail referred to... Few of our citizens are aware of this, that the timber used in the first jail in the county is still doing good service in this house.
