AN “UN-NAMED” BURIAL GROUND, SW ¼, Sec. 5, Locust Grove Twp.
In July, 1962, in company with MR. JOHN ROBERT GOBBLE (SAR) of Idaho Falls, Idaho, formerly of Fairfield, we visited this place, on a farm now occupied by a MR. MILLER and his family. We found only one tombstone:
GRAY: S. A., wife of L. H. GRAY, Died Sept. 8, 1892, Aged 40 y. 7 m. 1 D.
MR. R. BRUCE GOBBLE of Fairfield seems to be of the opinion that other burials had been made at that place. MR. MILLER also stated that he had been told there were other graves nearby, but no traces exist and no other stones have been found. MR. and MRS. MILLER told us that MRS. GRAY has at least one son living, whose home is at Winterset, Iowa. He is now elderly, but was a small boy when his mother died. MR. GRAY had been in the habit of making occasional pilgrimages to visit his mother’s grave, and to paint and maintain the board fence which surrounds her grave. Compiler understood that the GRAY family have lived on the farm at the time of the passing of the wife and mother.
