“In true Olney tradition Cyrus traveled about the Territory, acquiring land and practicing his profession, making homes in Portland and Salem. He was appointed a Trustee of the new Willamette University in January 1853, after having been admitted to the Oregon bar on Dec. 5 1851. On April 8 1853 President Franklin Pierce appointed Cyrus Olney Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of Oregon Territory.

“History of the Willamette Valley”

“Cyrus Olney grew to manhood in Ohio, studied law in Cincinnati, and was admitted to the bar; removed to Iowa and for four years was Circuit Judge. He came to Oregon Territory in October, 1851, across the plains, stopping at Salem and Portland, where he acquired property. In 1853 he was appointed Justice of the Supreme Court of Oregon. He resigned in 1857 and moved to Clatsop County and was named a member of the Constitutional Convention. Later, he went to the Sandwich Islands, but returned shortly afterwards to take up residence in Astoria and was elected to the Legislature in 1866-70. He was twice married and had several children, surviving them all. The town of Olney, Oregon, bears his names.”
