For sketch and obituary of Rev. Samuel HORTON see page 215, Vol. 2, JEFFERSON COUNTY RECORDS. He married first Gincy CRENSHAW; second, her sister, Eleanora CRENSHAW. They were daughters of John CRENSHAW and his wife, Martha, buried in the old Berry Grave Yard, Section 17, Lockridge Township.

Mr. J. Orville DONAHOE, 1322 Second Street, La Porte, Ind., writes under date of July 4, 1964, that his great-grandparents John CRENSHAW and Martha ("Patsy") CALDWELL, were married in Hancock County, Ill., Dec. 30, 1829, by Luther Whitney, Esquire. This was the third marriage after Hancock County was organized. Mr. DONAHOE has given us CRENSHAW records from an old family Bible:

Lucetta CRENSHAW, born April 27, 1842 in Hancock County, Ill., married Alfred Gallatin WEBB on April 3, 1858. Their daughter, Elizabeth Maria WEBB, born May 31, 1862 in Jefferson Co., Iowa, near Salina, married, Feb. 28, 1881, Michael Joseph DONAHOE; died June 2, 1942 in Des Moines, Iowa; buried Rose Hill Cemetery at Mt. Ayr. Iowa.

Mrs. Cillisa (Celatha) Jane SIMMONS, one of the oldest residents of Jefferson County and one of the pioneer settlers, died at her home near Four Corners this morning after a week's illness with measles. Mrs. SIMMONS was born in Illinois Sept. 21, 1831 and when a young girl moved to Jefferson County where she spent the remainder of her life. At the age of 16 she was married to Riley SIMMONS, who died about 12 years ago. Mrs. SIMMONS is survived by the following children: Mrs. Mattie LITTON, Winterset; Mrs. Mary PETERSON, Kansas; Mrs. Etta NELSON, Albia; Charles of Maxberg; Mrs. Lela LINDY, Frank and Sam, all of California; Mrs. Lulu HOPKINS of Penna.; Mrs. Alice BANCROFT, Kansas and Mrs. Della VOORHIES of Four Corners. Besides her children, Mrs. SIMMONS is survived by one sister, Mrs. Lusetta WEBB of Mt. Ayr.....

Will of John CRENSHAW dated 29 May 1856; filed first Monday of July; ordered recorded 12 July 1856. Names: Dial CRENSHAW, who has had 60 acres land conveyed to him by deed. I intend for him, Riley SIMMONS, and Samuel HORTON having 40 A. of land each conveyed to them by deed..... I bequeath to James ROSS..... I bequeath to John McCRILLIS..... Louize CRENSHAW..... Luceta CRENSHAW..... Ellinora CRENSHAW..... Leonard CRENSHAW, and Emra CRENSHAW, my two youngest sons..... Five youngest at home--Luceta, Louiza, Ellinora, Leonard and Emra. Sons in law John McCRILLIS and Samuel HORTON, Execs. & Gdns. Witnesses: Theophilus CRENSHAW and Wm. R. SIMMONS.

On the 1850 census of Jefferson County, Iowa, John CRENSHAW's birthplace is shown as Georgia; in 1880 Dial CRENSHAW gave his father's birthplace as Georgia.
