Edward Elvin ALVERSON was born on August 5th, 1869, in Batavia, Jefferson County, Iowa. He was the grandson of Jefferson County pioneers, and the oldest of seven children of William Butler ALVERSON and Priscilla Ann TROY. His entire childhood was apparently spent in the Batavia area. On April 13th, 1892, he married Effie WRIGHT, who was born on November 11th, 1872, probably in Davis County, Iowa. She was the daughter of Elijah Howell WRIGHT and Eunice Bell EVERETT. Effie was also the granddaughter of early Jefferson County pioneers. Edward and Effie had seven children between 1894 and 1912. They were:

Ansel ALVERSON (1894-1900)
Gladys Leana ALVERSON (1897-1968); m. in 1918 to Charles GRIGG
Erwin Wright ALVERSON (1901-1990); m. in 1928 to Georgia Rae Burris FRYMOYER
Helen Marie ALVERSON (1904-1994); m. in 1928 to Albert H. LENHARD
Edward Elvin Jr. ALVERSON (1906-1964); m. in 1929 to Bernadine M. COLLINS
Mattie Irena ALVERSON (1907-1994); m. in 1930 to Reuben Silas PADGETT
Grace LaVarre ALVERSON (1912-1970); m. # 1 to Edmund REYNOLDS

In 1901, the family left Iowa with other members of the Wright family to settle in Ellis County, Oklahoma, and the last five children were born in Oklahoma. In about 1915, the family moved again to take a 320 acre land claim in Los Animas County, Colorado (Section 34 of T31S, Range 58W). During the 1920’s, after giving up farming, Edward and Effie lived in Canon City, Colorado, where Edward worked in the mines. In fact throughout their time of residence in Oklahoma and Colorado, Edward often worked off the farm, in oil fields, in mines, or in warehouses, to provide income to the family. Edward never learned to drive, but he was skilled at working with horses and mules. About 1936 Edward and Effie moved to California, first to the Los Angeles area where Edward Jr. lived, and then after about 1940 to Bakersfield, after Edward Jr. moved his family there. Edward Jr. had a small home built next to his home in Bakersfield, and for nearly all of the remainder of their lives, Edward and Effie lived at 217 Rexland Dr. in Bakersfield. Edward and Effie had nine grandchildren. Effie died on December 24, 1962, at the age of 90, in Kern County, California, and Edward died on January 18, 1964, at the age of 94, in Los Angeles County, California.
