William Butler ALVERSON was born on September 6, 1846, in Garrard County, Kentucky. He was the fifth of eleven children of Benjamin ALVERSON and Celesta HURT. In 1848, when William was about two years old, the family emigrated to southeastern Iowa, and William spent the remainder of his childhood living in the vicinity of Batavia, in Jefferson and Wapello Counties. William apparently did not serve in the Civil War, as he turned 18 in September 1864, just when the war was coming to a close. Certainly he would have heard of the first hand experiences of his older brother Joseph, who did serve in the Union Army. In 1869, William married Priscilla Ann TROY, who was born in 1852 in Jefferson County, Iowa. Priscilla was the ninth of ten children of George Washington TROY and Rosetta HOSKINS. William and Priscilla had seven children between 1869 and 1883, all of whom were born in Jefferson County. They were:

Edward Elvin ALVERSON (1869-1964); m. in 1892 to Effie WRIGHT
Olive May ALVERSON (1872-1886)
Charles William ALVERSON (1874-1874)
Benjamin (Bennie) ALVERSON (ca. 1875- after 1880) note: this child is listed in the 1880 census as a daughter named “Minnie”
George Eugene ALVERSON (1879-1964); m. in 1922 to Autine A. MALLOY
Alta May ALVERSON (1881-1950); m. to ZEHR (given name not known)
John or Ernest ALVERSON (1883- after 1900)

The family apparently resided in Batavia during that time period, and two of their children who died before reaching adulthood are buried in Dunkard-Brethren cemetery. In an 1885 census, the William Alverson family is listed as residing on Fourth St. in Batavia, and William's occupation is listed as "huckster". An undated directory of Batavia (ca. 1887-1890) states that William Alverson is "probably the best posted poultry man in the county", and "buys some $10,000 worth each winter". Priscilla apparently died some time prior to 1900, and in that year William was recorded in the U.S. census as living with his youngest son in Davis Co., IA. In the 1910 census, William was recorded as living (alone) in Melbourne, Harrison Co., Missouri. Both the 1900 and 1910 censuses record William’s occupation as “poultry dealer”. William died on June 9, 1913, at the age of 66. At the time of his death, William was living in Goodman, McDonald Co., Missouri, where his son George Eugene resided. The burial location was recorded as Batavia. Other than the seven offspring of Edward Elvin, it is not known how many grandchildren William and Priscilla had, but there may not have been any more.
