Obituary
Hanawalt, George Washington

George W. Hanawalt was born at Mapleton, PA., May 8, 1839, and died at his late home, 2 1/2 miles east of Colfax, May 22, 1914, from the effects of hemorrhage of the brain. When 16 years old he moved with his father and a brother to the vicinity of Rock Island, Ill., near where he was married to Miss Olivia Coulter in 1860. Four children were born to this union the eldest William, passing away when eleven years old. The surviving children are Mrs. Amanda Waggoner, Marshalltown; Mrs. Ida Kahle, Mason City, and James G. of this place.

Mr. Hanawalt enlisted in the War of the Rebellion as a member of Company I, 126th Illinois Infantry, and served three years being mustered out May 8, 1865, at the close of the war. Returning from the army he again looked up peaceful pursuits, and soon afterwards moved to his future home east of Colfax.

His first wife passed out of this life in 1871, and he was married to Miss Julia King in 1873. Six children were the fruits of this union, all of whom with the mother survive. They are Roland, Ralph, Elmer, Mrs. Zaraida Young and Mrs. Catherine Good, of this locality, and Mrs. D. Diamond, of Newton, and all his surviving children were present at the funeral, which was held under the protection of the beautiful trees at Slaughter's cemetery, Sunday, May 24, and was conducted by Rev. Munyon, Pastor of the Colfax Christian Church; E. D. Duncan Post G.A.R. of which order he was a charter member, having charge of the ceremonies and acting as his pallbearers. Comrade Silas Poling made a short address that touched every adult heart present, and the old veteran was laid under the sod near the home he loved so dearly, with the peaceful military honors that characterize the G.A.R. rite and the entire ceremony was as simple as he could have wished.

Mr. Hanawalt did not leave much in the way of worldly goods, but he left a name for honesty and integrity that all his surviving relatives will have pride in to the end of time.

We desire to thank friends and neighbors for their kindness and assistance in our hours of our great bereavement, the loss of husband and father. Mrs. G. W. Hanawalt and children.
