James R. Hanawalt, 85, 1020 E. 12th St. N. died Monday, Jan. 28, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services will be Thursday at Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax with Georgia Clement officiating. Burial will be at Colfax Cemetery. Friends may call today at the funeral home where family will be available from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The son of Ralph and Cora Malcomson Hanawalt, he was born May 26, 1916, in Colfax. On Sept. 16, 1951, he married Betty J. Merrill in Oskaloosa. He has been a lifelong resident of Jasper County. Mr. Hanawalt retired from the Maytag Company and was a member of Local 997. He enjoyed woodworking and family events.

Survivors include his wife, two sons, five grandchildren, 11 great- grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded In death by his parents, four brothers, a sister and a daughter.

James R. Hanawalt, 85, of Newton died of cancer Monday at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax, with burial at Colfax Cemetery.

Mr. Hanawalt was born in Colfax and had lived in the area most of his life before moving to Newton in 1977. He had worked for Maytag Corp. before retiring and was a member of United Auto Workers. He enjoyed woodworking and family activities.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; two sons, James Jr. of Des Moines and Charles Douglas of Kellogg; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Friends may call after 1 p.m. today at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
