KELLOGG -- Francis Sullen, 87, and his wife, Alberta Sullen, 84, died Wednesday, Sept. 27, at their home in Kellogg.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell.

Burial will be in Our Silent City Cemetery in Kellogg.

KELLOGG -- Funeral services for Francis (Bub) Sullens, 87, and his wife Alberta C. Smith Sullen, 84, of Kellogg will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, at Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell.

The Rev. Lyle Johnston, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Kellogg, will conduct services. Burial will be in Our Silent City Cemetery in Kellogg.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions to the Kellogg United Methodist Church or the Kellogg Historical Society will be accepted.

Mr. Sullens is survived by a brother, William (Mike) Sullens of Gordon, Neb.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Trella Robison, and three brothers, George, Charles and Albert Sullens.

Mr. Sullens was a member of the Kellogg United Methodist Church, a former Kellogg fire chief, a member of the Kellogg Masonic Lodge and the Kellogg Historical Society.

He was an employee of Jasper County, for which he was a supervisor on road and bridge construction. The son of Charles and Rosetta De Hart Sullens, he was born April 13, 1902 in Jasper County.

He was married to Alberta M. Smith June 9, 1927 at Cedar Falls.

Mrs. Sullens is survived by a brother, Charles Lee Smith of Grinnell, and two sisters, Louise C. Falk of St. Paul, Minn., and Ada Eames of Gilman.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Howard H. Smith, and a sister Edith Fay Veber.

Mrs. Sullens was a member of the Kellogg United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women and the Kellogg Historical Society.

The daughter of Joseph and Mary Elizabeth Hay Smith, she was born June 7, 1905 in Jasper County.

A graduate of Newburg Community High School, she attended Iowa State Teachers College (now the University of Northern Iowa) at Cedar Falls and taught in rural Jasper County schools.

Homicide, suicide ruled in elderly couple’s death

KELLOGG -- The deaths of two elderly Kellogg residents were ruled a homicide and suicide Monday by a Jasper County medical examiner.

Francis Sullens, 87, and his wife, Alberta Sullens, 84, were found dead in their Kellogg home last week. Both people died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Dr. Pat Edwards, Jasper County medical examiner, ruled that Alberta Sullens died as a result of a homicide and that Francis Sullens committed suicide. Edwards said Alberta Sullens was suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease at the time of her death.
