Harold L. Still

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. -- Funeral services for Harold L. Still, 75, of No. 5 Cortez Rd., Apt. 436, Hot Springs Village, Hot Springs, Ark., a former resident of Newton, were held Monday, Aug. 14, in Fairfield Bay, Ark.

Mr. Still, a former Big Ten official for 20 years and official at both Rose Bowl and Cotton Bowl football games, died Thursday following an illness of many months.

Survivors are his wife, Lucille; a son, David, of Bellevue, Wash.; a daughter, Peggy McLain, of Derwood, Md.; seven grandchildren; a brother Roy L. “Bud” Still of Chattanooga, Tenn.; three sisters, Beulah Hofmann of Lincoln, Neb.; Arlene Rundall of Newton and Maxine Benson of Cedar Rapids; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mr. Still, who had taught and coached in Clarion and Cedar Rapids, retired in 1979 after 30 years as manager of the sports goods department at Armstrongs Department Store in Cedar Rapids.

Mr. Still, a Navy veteran of World War II, was past president and state officer of the Lions Club in Cedar Rapids and Fairfield Bay and a member of many other organizations.

The son of Ray L. and Gladys McWhinney Still, he was born in Clarinda, March 3, 1914. He was graduated from Newton Community High School in 1932, where he was an outstanding athlete. In 1936 he was graduated from Cornell College where he was an outstanding athlete and later was named to the school’s Hall of Fame.

He was married to Lucille Roach of Nashua May 30, 1937.

He moved to Newton with his parents in 1916 and from Cedar Rapids to Arkansas after his retirement.
