Gladstone E. Smith

JEWELL -- Gladstone Ewart Smith, 92, of Jewell, a former Jasper County resident, died Thursday, Sept. 7, at Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Federated United Church of Christ in Jewell. Burial will be at approximately 2:30 p.m. Monday at Newton Union Cemetery.

Survivors are his wife, Augustinea May; two daughters, Patricia (Mrs. Marvin) Hodson of Largo, Fla., and Shirley (Mrs. Elmer “Bud”) Mage of Charles City; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The son of Hugh and Mary Staniforth Smith, he was born south of Newton Jan. 21, 1897. He was educated in rural Jasper County schools.

He was married to Tina De Bolt and the couple farmed near Newton until 1933 when they moved to Marshall County. They moved to Grundy County in 1944.

Mr. Smith retired from farming in 1963 and moved to Jewell.

After the death of his first wife in 1967, he married his present wife in May of 1970.
