George E. Beam, 86, of Newton died of cancer Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2005, at his home.
A graveside service with military rites will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell with the Rev. John Saxton officiating. Memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice of Jasper County. Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell is handling arrangements.
The son of Glen "Jack" and Myrtle (Hulbert) Beam, he was born Aug. 27, 1919, in Grinnell. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was married to Charlene "Chuck" Rutledge in 1946, and the couple made their home in Grinnell. They moved to Newton in 1968.
Mr. Beam was employed with the Maytag Company for 30 years and retired in 1977. Following the death of his wife in 1977, he was married to Barbara Jean Rudolph on May 15, 1984, in Tama. The couple continued to make their home in Newton. He was a member of the Newton American Legion and V.F.W. He enjoyed family vacations, hunting, fishing and riding his motorcycle. He was an avid fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara; two daughters, Lorna Beam and Patricia Huff of Newton; one son, Glen Beam of Des Moines; one sister, Betty Innis of Newburg; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife; and two brothers, Clayton Beam and Lester "Bud" Hill.
