Fern Lettie (Oswalt) Wood

Fern Lettie (Oswalt) Wood, 87, of Newton died from complications of cancer Wednesday, Oct. 2, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Fielding Funeral Home in Chariton. Burial was at Zion Cemetery.

Memorials will be accepted to the American Cancer Society or the Alzheimer's Association.

The daughter of Chester Earl and Margaret Grace (Duckworth) Whittlesey, she was born June 28, 1915, in Russell. She was married to Arthur Oswalt, who died in 1952, and to Dale Wood, who passed away in 1975. She worked for the Maytag Company for 21 years in the paint department.

Mrs. Wood was a volunteer for the Senior Citizen's Center, Chariton Museum and Chariton Hospital and a member of the Lions Club. In 1978, she moved from Newton to Williamson and then back to Newton three years ago. She enjoyed making afghans and quilts and enjoyed crafts, gardening, and the outdoors.

Survivors include her special friend, Herman Johnson; a son, Gene Oswalt of Knoxville; four daughters, Evelyn Hodges of Newton, Linda Kunzie and Mary Scannapleco, both of Allerton, and Lorraine White of Newton; two brothers, Cecil Whittlesey of Corydon and Ralph Whittlesey of Idaho; a sister, Marlene Buckalew of Sun City, Ariz.; 13 greadchildren; 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. ~ The Newton Daily News, October 10, 2002.
