The funeral of Mrs. Richard Hudson, whose death occured on Thursday morning of last week after a long illness, was held at the Congregational church on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 conducted by Rev. Appleby. The singing was by a quartette composed of Mrs. M. B. Hoskins, Mrs. D. J. Eberhart, W. P. Waters and Rosa Mills, with Robert McGregor as organist. The pall-bearers were: Messrs. Nate Bloomfield, Jesse Waldon, W. E. F. Fine, Kenneth Fine, Marion Malze and Clarence Miller.

Mary Angeline Blackwell was born at Caldwell, Missouri, in 1960 and died at her home in Newton, Iowa, January 20th, 1910. Although born in a slave state before the Civil war she was free born. During the Civil war her family removed to Grinnell where she grew up. At the age of twelve years she was converted and united with the First Congregational church in Grinnell. About 1875, she was married in Newton to Richard Hudson. She made her home in this city for thirty-five years, save for a period in 1907-08 when she resided temporarily in Kansas. She was the mother of nine children, of whom there are seven living: Carrie, Earl, Helen, Joe, Tracey, Ethel Marie and Leonard. A sister, Helen Blackwell, of Ellsworth, Kansas, was with Mrs. Hudson during her last hours.

Mrs. Hudson was a member of the First Congregational church of this city, and in his remarks Rev. Appleby spoke very highly of her religious life as he had known it. She stood for those things which meant the uplife of the race and was highly respectd by all who knew her. ~ Newton Journal, January 26, 1910
