ROCK FALLS, Ill. - Lavina Kay Dawson, 56, of Rock Falls, Ill, formerly of Jasper County, died Monday, June 16, at Rockford Memorial Hospital in Rockford.

Services were held at Hamilton's Funeral Home in Des Moines on Tuesday with the Rev. Tom Burns officiating. Burial was at Greencastle Cemetery in rural Mingo. A lunch was served at the Mingo Community Center following the burial. Pocahontas Memorial Rites were performed at the graveside by members of Mohea Council, assisted by members of other councils.

The daughter of Charles Elias and Catharine Jane (Wade) Brown, she was born June 10, 1947, in Des Moines. The family lived in Colfax until January of 1948 when they moved to Newton. She attended school in Newton until moving to Greencastle in July of 1959. She graduated from Mingo High School with the class of 1965. On May 4, 1968, she was married to Frederick Leroy Pinegar in Des Moines. The marriage ended in divorce and she was married July 2, 1978, in Newton to Ronald Lee Dawson. They were also divorced. Lavina Kay and her son Michael lived in Mingo and Colfax until about five years ago when she moved to Rock Falls, Ill., to be near her daughter and grandchildren. Harold Dop was her companion for several years until his death in January of 1984.

She was a member of Mohea Council No. 26, Degree of Pocahontas, having joined when she was 16 years of age. She received the highest honor that can be obtained in the state when she was elected and served as Great Pocahontas of Iowa.

Survivors include her two sons, Frederick Pinegar II of Des Moines and Michael Pinegar of Rock Falls, Ill; a daughter and son-in-law, Tim and Michelle (Pinegar) Harrell of Rock Falls, Ill.; four grandchildren; her mother, Catharine Henderson of Mingo; stepmother, Mildred Brown of Osceola; one brother, Charles Robert Brown and his wife Diana of Baxter; three sisters: Mrs. Larry (Nora) Borts Sr. of Mingo; Mrs. Michael (Cora) Williams, of Collins; Mrs. Ed (Marilyn Sue) Gilkison Jr. of Colfax; two step-brothers, Clifford Henderson and wife, Doris, of Des Moines; Ronald Henderson and wife, Coleen, of Colfax; seven stepsisters, Mildred (Henderson) Van Sant of Long Beach, Calif., Roberta (Johnson) Baze of Creston, Linda (Barger) Baldwin of Hartford, Penny (Barger) Pickerell of Auxvasse, Mo., Susan (Barger) Wade of Olatha, Kan.; Jackie (Morton) Morris of Des Moines and Brenda (Morton) Belieu of Keokuk. She also is survived by several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, her step father, Harold Everett Henderson, and an infant sister, Julia Catharine Henderson.
