Margaret Irene Sumpter, 90, of 809 E. 10th St. S. died of congestive heart failure Friday, April 25, at her home.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 1 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Newton with Pastor Doug Bryce and Pastor Dave Smiley, interim pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Union Chapel Cemetery in rural Ira. Pence Funeral Home in Newton is handling arrangements.

Friends may call from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the church on Monday, where the family will be available. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church or in her name.

The daughter of Chester and Minnie (Woollard) Kiser, she was born May 4, 1912, in rural Pella. She graduated from Pella High School and acquired a normal teaching certificate. On Oct. 8, 1943, she married Otis H. Sumpter in Lancaster, Mo. She was a homemaker and taught school in Mahaska and Jasper County schools for 10 years.

She was a member of Newton First Baptist Church, MMR Circle, Sunshine Club, Progressive Builders Sunday School class, Golden Agers, former Sunday School teacher and Chicago Cubs fan. She was a resident of Newton since 1979 and lived on a farm west of Baxter prior to moving to Newton.

Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Judy Sumpter of Ankeny and Jimmie and Cathy Sumpter of Baxter; a daughter, Margie Tibbins of Johnston; five grandchildren; and several step-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers, Leo, Paul and Loyde Kiser, and a sister, June Shadley.
