Burl E. Hess, 85, of 505 S. 3rd Ave. E. died of complications of Alzheimer's disease Thursday, April 24, at Careage of Newton in Newton.

Funeral Hess services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with Chaplain Merle Smith of Skiff Medical Center officiating.

Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service Sunday at the funeral home. The family will be available at the funeral home from 1 p.m. until the time of the service.

Memorials will be accepted to Hospice of Jasper County or to the Alzheimer's Association -Mid-Iowa chapter and may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Noble and Jannie (Winfrey) Hess, he was born Sept. 11, 1917, in Sleeper, Mo. He graduated from Newton Senior High School in 1935. On March 13, 1948, he married Mildred "Mickey" Good in Unionville, Mo. He was a machinist and toolmaker and worked for the Parsons Company in Newton for 36 years and Fisher Controls in Marshalltown for six years. He retired in 1982.

Mr. Hess was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Newton and the Moose Lodge No. 923. He was a longtime resident of Newton.

Survivors include his wife; a son and fiancé, Burl "Gene" Hess II and Sonya Mehta of Coralville; three daughters and sons-in-law, Kris Lynn and Jeff Long and Janie and Bob
Gallaway, all of Newton, and Judy and Keith Warner of Cedartown, Ga.; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Elsie Welcher, and a nephew.
