Rayford E. Sutphin, 72, of 904 N. 6th Ave. E., No.2, died of cancer Monday, March 3, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at Pence Funeral Home in Newton with Mr. Glen Oswalt of the Community of Christ Church officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Newton.

Friends may call from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in his name or to Hospice of Jasper County.

The son of Francis Albert and Marie Frances (Beason) Sutphin, he was born April 28, 1930, in Newburg. He attended Newton Senior Nigh School. In March 1954 he married Mildred D. Dehaan in Hernando, Miss. He worked in the porcelain department of Maytag and retired in 1990 after more than 30 years.

He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was a P.O.W. He was a member of V.F.W. No. 1655, American Legion No. 111 of Newton and Moose Lodge No. 923 of Newton. He also was employed by Maple's and Lauterbach auto dealerships from 1991 to 2000. He enjoyed the outdoors, cars, camping, boating and traveling.

Survivors include two stepsons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Kathleen Meador of Knoxville and Roger and Janice Meador of rural Knoxville; a step-daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Sy Kuennen of Phoenix, Ariz.; six step-grandchildren; 16 step great-grandchildren; two sisters, Pauline Ackland of Kellogg and Mary Bunker of Des Moines; companion, Mildred D. Sutphin of Newton and special friend, Darlene Proctor of Grinnell; and one niece.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
