Kellogg, Ia. (Special to The Daily News) – Funeral services for Mrs. Bert Stemsrud of Montezuma, former resident of this vicinity who died Christmas morning at University hospital in Iowa City were held at the Ebenezer Lutheran church in Grinnell Friday afternoon, Dec. 27, at 2: o’clock.
Rev. Nelson Murdock, pastor of the Barrett Community church and personal friend of the family was in charge of the rites. Music included two solos, “Beautiful Isle of Somewhere” and “The Old Rugged Cross”, sung by Mrs. Bouma of Grinnell.
S. H. Newell, T. A. Nesmith, Dr. F. S. Hill, J. M. Gilreath, Rodell Meyer and G. R. Hawley, members of Meridian lodge No. 280 A.F. and A.M., of this place served as pallbearers.
Burial was made in Hazelwood cemetery at Grinnell with the impressive O.E.S. graveside ceremony being given by Kellogg chapter No. 150. Mrs. F. A. Drown acted as Worthy Matron, Emerson Scoville as Worthy Patron, Mrs. M. T. Williams as chaplain, Inez Powers as Adah, Mrs. Meyer as Ruth, Mrs. J. H. Nesmith as Esther, Mrs. J. M. Gilreath as Martha and Viola Scoville as Electa.
Betty McKibben was born in Cleveland, Ohio, July 24, 1909, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James McKibben. The family came to Iowa when she was eight years of age, locating in Jasper county north of Kellogg.
She was graduated from the Laurel high school in the class of 1927 and following that attended Iowa State Teachers college, and taught in the rural schools of Poweshiek county.
She was united in marriage to Bert Stemsrud May 3, 1933, at the Little Brown church in Nashua and they began their married life on a farm north of Kellogg, later moving to a farm southeast of town, then purchased a farm near Ewart and moved there about two years ago.
One son was born of this union, Bob Berton, aged 5 years.
She was a member of Kellogg chapter No. 450 O.E.S., at Kellogg and always took an active part in the church in the community where she lived.
She had been ill for a period of 15 days.
Surviving relatives include her husband and son of Montezuma, her parents who reside south of town, three sisters, Mrs. James Anderson, Mrs. Beryl Braley and Sara McKibben and two brothers, James and John McKibben, all of this place besides numerous other relatives and friends.
