August Hager, Baxter Dies
Baxter – August H. Hager, 65, native of Germany and 46 years operator of the Hager mills, died at noon today of a heart attack suffered in his home as he talked with his wife in the kitchen.
Hager, Coroner Ralph V. Toland, who was called in the case, told his wife of a pain in his chest. He took a drink of water and then started into another room to lie down, and fell over, dying instantly.
The coroner pronounced death due to heart attack.
Hager was survived by his wife and a daughter Lorraine of Mason City.

Baxter (Special to The Daily News) – August Henry Hager was born at Rahfeld, Lippe Detmold, Germany, Sept. 5, 1875, the youngest of five children born to Herman Hager and is wife, Sophie Stock Hager. Of his two brothers and two sisters, Herman, Frederick, Caroline and Wilhelmine, only Fred remains. He was formerly a resident of Baxter and now residing near Indianola, Ia.
Mr. Hager grew up in the country of his birth, receiving there his boyhood schooling and training. His older brother, Fred, had emigrated to the United States in 1882 and following the call, August, at the age of 18, in March of the year 1894, and in company with August Groene, came to the United States with Baxter, Ia., as their destination. After working on a farm through the summer, August associated himself with his brother, Fred in the Baxter roller mills at which occupation he continued for 46 years. Twelve years together with his brother, Fred, 8 years with Henry Noah, sr., and since then taking it over alone, serving the community in the profession conscientiously and very satisfactorily.
On April 6, 1904, he married Miss Caroline Kracht, and to this-union one daughter, Lorraine, was born.
Mr. Hager served on the school board eight years and as manager of the Baxter band for five years , an esteemed and staunch member of the Bethany Reformed church for many years.
The deceased, a man of strong physique and unusually good health, had not been noticeably ill and coming home from the mill for dinner on Tuesday, Feb. 11, complained of a pain to his chest, about to lie down to rest, he suddenly collapsed and died, having reached the age of 65 years, 5 months and 4 days.
Short services were held at the home Friday afternoon, Feb. 14, 1941, followed by services at the Bethany Reformed church at 2 o’clock, with Rev. D E. Bosma in charge
Music was furnished by Lowell Lyford, singing a solo at the home and at the church by Mrs. Albert Ludeking. Mrs. Ivan Waterman and Miss Arlene Ludeking with Miss Edith Krampe at the organ.
Pallbearers were Arthur Dodd, O. E. Cunningham, Calvin Noah, sr., Simon Stock, Mr. Wykie of Marshalltown and Mr. Stuart of Des Moines.
Interment was at the church cemetery.
