Dennis, Emily Brook – 1850-1940

Mrs. Emily Brook Dennis, 506 South Third Avenue West, died at noon Christmas Day at the Mercy hospital in Des Moines. She observed her 90th birthday last March 2 and due to her advanced age, had been in failing health. She took ill about two weeks ago and entered the hospital a week later.
Funeral services were conducted at 2 o’clock Saturday afternoon at the Morgan and Son Funeral home. Dr. L. B. Logan was in charge with interment in the Newton Union cemetery.
Emily Brook was born at DeKalb, Ill., and came to Iowa in 1857 and had lived here the rest of her life. She was the daughter of Clement and Charlotte A. Brook.
On Dec. 6, 1866, she was united in marriage with Azariah Dennis. To this union were born eight children, three of whom Mrs. Erville Callison of Kellogg, Wallace S. of Des Moines, and Harry of Newton, preceded her in death. Mr. Dennis died in 1920.
She was a member of the Methodist church and an honorary member of the Women’s Relief Corps. She also was a member of the Three Quarter Century club of The Newton Daily News and Jasper County Record.
Surviving relatives are her five children: Mrs. W. W. Cole of Los Angeles, Calif.; Fred C. Dennis, Mrs. Walter F. Wilson and Edith M. Dennis of Newton and Mrs. Fern L. Gowin of Des Moines. A sister, Mrs. T. J. Flora, lives at Fort Des Moines.

Final rites for Mrs. Emily Brook Dennis, 90, were conducted Saturday afternoon at the Morgan and Son Funeral home with Dr. L. B. Logan in charge.
Pallbearers were Robert Besack, Joseph Dennis, Robert Dennis, Randall Stagner, Howard Gowin and Clement Callison. Interment was in the Newton Union cemetery.
A. Eugene Burton accompanied by Lois Hundling, sang “Lead Kindly Light” and “In the Garden”. Mrs. Robert Besack and Mrs. Charles Keith were in charge of the flowers.
