W. H. Callen Rites Held At Iconium
Funeral services for William Henry Callen, 83, were conducted Wednesday afternoon in the Methodist church at Iconium, Ia., by the Rev. J. F. Phillips of the First Baptist church of Newton with the Rev. Ott of Iconium assisting. Burial was made in the Iconium cemetery.
Mr. Callen died Tuesday, Jan. 7, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Earl Woodcock, here in Newton.
He was born Dec. 4, 1857 in Appanoose county near Moravia, Ia., the son of Anderson and Mary Callen. He had spent his entire life in Appanoose and Monroe counties with the exception of two year in Minnesota and the last three years in Newton.
Wed in 1880
He was united in marriage in 1880 at Albia, Ia., with Mary Derby, who died in 1885. To this union were born four children, Norris, Mrs. Ethel Richy and Mrs. Clara Speer of Albia, Ia., and Ray who died in infancy.
He was again united in marriage on March 15, 1887, at Albia, Ia., to Rebecca P. Albertson, who died April 9, 1938.
To this union were born ten children, Orville L., of South Bend, Ind.; Lawrence E., who died Sept. 2, 1919; Mrs. Merle Cline of Chugwater, Wyo.; Mrs. Earl (Edith) Woodcock and Mrs. Gilbert (Audrey) Woodcock and Mayme Callen of Newton; Orrin W. of Albia, Ia.; Mrs. Viola Clark and Mrs. Vern Moore of Melrose, Ia., and Gilbert J. of Mystic, Ia.
Church Member
He became a member of the Methodist church at Iconium, Ia., when a young man and remained a faithful member, he and his family being regular attenders.
Surviving are 12 children, 36 grandchildren, three brothers, C. S. of Moravia, Ia., Sherman of Albia, Ia., and Frank M. Callen of Leeton, Mo.; two sisters, Mrs. Eliza Coulson of Centerville, Ia., and Mrs. Mary Stonerook of McCool, Nebr.
He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and a host of neighbors and friends.
