James Edward Ferguson, Jr., 63, of Newton, died Tuesday morning, February 13, 2024, at Unity Point Iowa Methodist Medical Center. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, February 26, 2024, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton. The family will greet friends from 10-11 a.m., Monday, February 26, at the funeral home.

James, known as Jim—and still Jimmy to many members of his family—was born February 10, 1961, in Newton, the first-born child to Jim and Sheryl Ferguson. Jim grew up in Newton playing baseball, football, track and field, and swimming. His involvement in athletics was the foundation of many lifelong friendships. In high school he played on the state winning football team of 1977, and qualified to run in the Drake relays and the high school state championship meet as a sprinter. He was also a member of the Newton YMCA and high school swim teams. He earned his Eagle Scout badge from the Boy Scouts of America. He also participated in youth group at the First United Methodist Church in Newton, where he was confirmed in the Christian faith.

Jim graduated from Newton High School in 1979. He began his working career as part of a road construction crew, and eventually followed in the footsteps of his father to become a truck driver. Jim’s happiest moments were driving his truck and seeing the countryside, often sharing pictures and stories of the many places he got to see and visit as part of his career.

Jim was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan, a Green Bay Packer fan, and loved racing of all types. He especially loved watching the sprint car races in Knoxville and the NASCAR races held at the Iowa Speedway. His Boy Scout days never left him as he enjoyed camping and the quiet solitude of nature his entire life.

Jim was preceded in death by his father, James Edward Ferguson, Sr., his grandparents, Elvin and Catherine (Jack) Koder and Olive (Ray) Ferguson.

He is survived by his mother, Kathryn Sheryl (Koder) Ferguson; his son, James Leroy Ferguson (Helena); his daughter, Amanda Marie Sites; his grandchildren: Ashlyn Ferguson, a baby grandson, Justin Travis Ferguson, expected in July 2024, and Tukker, Taiden, and Theodore. He is also survived by his sisters: Deborah (Brent) Bagnall, Kristy (Andy) Warren, and Janet (Bob) Dooley; many nieces and nephews; and his beloved partner, Darla Osborn.
