DICKENS, Texas - Winston Roy James, 68, of Dickens, Texas, formerly of Newton, died Monday, March 24, at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Calvary Baptist Church in Post, Texas, with the Rev. Les Atkins officiating. Burial will follow in the Terrace Cemetery under the direction of the Hudman Funeral Home.

Born April 24, 1934, in Cross Roads to Roy and Evalina James, he joined the United States Army in 1953 and underwent basic training at Fort Sill, Okla. He served in Korea from 1953 until 1956. In 1963 he moved to Texas from Newton, where he worked for Maytag until his retirement in 1992. He returned to Dickens in 1997. He was a member of the VFW.

He married Betty Walls Aug. 8, 1953. She preceded him in death Dec. 6, 1997.

Survivors include two sons and one daughter-in-law, Travis and Christina James and William James, all of Newton; two daughters and two sons-in-law, Jackie and Kevin Gooding and Donna and Daryl Soderblom of Newton; four sisters, Ruth Martin and Elberta Martin, both of Post, Texas; Claudene Bilberry of Dallas, Texas, and Delores Baldridge of Dimmitt; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
