Mabel E. Clausen Cessford, 89, of 1105 E. 12th St. S. died of complications of cancer, Saturday, March 29, at USA Healthcare in Newton.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Duane Skidmore of the Reasnor United Methodist Church and her nephew, the Rev. Harold Schutte of the First Assembly of God Church in Oskaloosa, officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Zion Cemetery in rural Newton.

Friends may call after noon Tuesday at the funeral home where the family will be available from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to the Reasnor United Methodist Church, Hospice of Jasper County or to the McCann Village and may be left at the funeral home.

The daughter of John E and Adah E. (Woody) Schutte, she was born May 4, 1913, in Spencer, S.D. On Aug. 14, 1937, she married Laurence Clausen in Newton. She later married James Cessford on April 15, 1961, in Monroe. She owned and operated a nursing home in Monroe, worked on the farm, worked for Clara Roush Custodial Home and also for the Embassy Manor Nursing Home in Newton.

Mrs. Cessford was a former member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church until it’s closing and was a member of the Reasnor United Methodist Church. She lived in the Mt. Zion area of Jasper County from September 1936 to 1961. She lived in Monroe from 1961 to 1975.

Survivors include a sister, Ruth Montgomery of Newton; two brothers, James Schutte of Prairie City and Ray Schutte of Kellogg; a niece and six nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and both husbands.
