Roseanne McCargar
1935-2022

It is with heavy hearts we share the news of Roseanne Mauro McCargar’s passing. Our mom and Nana has joined her parents Joe and Margaret Mauro in Heaven. Roseanne passed away on December 6, 2022.

Roseanne was born into a large Italian family just short of 87 years ago on December 29, 1935. The oldest girl and one of nine she grew up on the southside of Des Moines in the house she was born in. She attended St. Anthony School, St. Joseph Academy and Mercy School of Nursing. Ironically, she later worked at St. Anthony’s as the school secretary. For nearly 25 years she proudly and passionately cared for children and families of the St. Anthony community.

She couldn’t go anywhere without running into a student, parent or grandparent who would stop her to recall a time when she went out of her way to help them and to thank her once again. Prior to working at St. Anthony’s, Roseanne mentored teens through the Page program as Sergeant at Arms of the House of Representatives. Once again, the students were drawn to her.

Time spent at the capitol was something she enjoyed very much. Outside of work, she never missed a road trip, Drake game, or a long Saturday at the Iowa State Fair. She couldn’t sing a lick, but that didn’t stop her from calling you every single year to sing Happy Birthday. She hosted EVERY holiday. What we wouldn’t give for just one more. Always eager to hear a funny story about one of the kids, or ready to listen if we had a rough day, she was just a phone call away. We could always count on mom. Everybody could. She never turned anyone away in need. In return she would ask for just one thing; a really big hug. Nobody LOVED hugs more than Roseanne. Looking forward to that next embrace in Heaven are children from her marriage to Dale McCargar and their spouses. Sue (Jim Coggi), Duke (Hollie), Dee-Dee (Rob Davis), Kris (Dan Schechter) and Rob (Rene’). Thirteen grandchildren, eight greats and one on the way. She is also survived by siblings Don, Frank, Joe, John, Chi-Chi and Michael. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother Marty and sister, Sister Joanne. What a Heavenly reunion it will surely be. A visitation will be held Tuesday, December 13th from 4:00-7:00pm at Dunn’s on Grand. The funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, at 10am at St. Anthony’s. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution to St. Jude Children’s Hospital or a food pantry of your choice. Both favorites of Roseanne.
