Josephine W (Thomas) Shepard
August 10, 1926 ~ December 16, 2023 (age 97)

Josephine “Josie” Winifred Shepard, 97, of Newton, formerly of England, died on Saturday, December 16, 2023, at her home in Newton Village. Services are pending at this time. Memorials in Josie’s name (checks made payable to Kim Meyer) may be left at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory.

Josephine, the daughter of John and Kathleen (Driscoll) Thomas, was born on August 10, 1926 in East Ham London, England. She grew up in England spending most of her childhood years in Coggeshall and Whitley Bay. During WWII, she met and married Charles “Chuck” Shepard on September 9, 1944 in Kelvedon, England. Shortly after they were married and the war ended, they moved to the United States, making their home in Newton, Iowa in 1946. Josie worked as a receptionist at Parsons and then as a supply clerk at the Maytag Company, retiring in 1988. Chuck and Jo enjoyed wintering in Florida. Josie loved to golf and spent time at Westwood Golf Course in Newton and the Williston Country Club in Florida.

Josie was always extremely classy and had great taste. She was an avid reader and took pride in learning and keeping up on current events. She loved her daily cup of hot tea, especially if her great-great-granddaughter (Mrs. Pookum-Pookum as she called her) was there to join her. Josie cared deeply for her family, especially her grandchildren and continued to give motherly love to her nurses and aids at Newton Village.

Josie is survived by her daughters, Kathy Green and Karen Shepard, both of Newton, granddaughters, Jennifer Gulling-Andrews and Kim (Rob) Meyer; great-grandchildren, Erin Suttek (Trent Williams) and Ryan Meyer; and great-great-grandchildren, Eleanor, Nolan, and Ledger. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles “Chuck” Shepard; son, Charles “Charlie” Shepard; sister, Margaret; and son-in-law, Ron Green.
