Esther Jean Hunt, 78, of Newton, died Friday, December 15, 2023, at Park Centre. The family will greet friends with a lunch from 12-1:30 p.m., Wednesday, December 27, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory in Newton. A private family burial will be held. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Park Centre Activities Fund can be left at the funeral home.

Esther, the daughter of Oris and Junia (Alderman) Swaim, was born October 24, 1945, in Collins, Iowa. She grew up in the Nevada and Collins areas and graduated from Collins-Maxwell High School. She then lived in Des Moines and Denver, Colorado, before moving to Iowa in the late 1970s, first living in Osceola and then making her home in Newton. Esther worked at the Hy-Vee Deli, Newton Manufacturing, and for Mid-American Dairy. Later in life she worked for Axtell Ford, as a paraeducator for the Newton schools, and at the Maytag Dairy Farm. Esther loved flowers and had her own dried flower shop, “Flowers by Jean”, for many years.

Esther was united in marriage with Jay Hunt, Jr. in 1982 in Marshalltown. She was a member of the Women of the Moose and spent countless hours volunteering with RSVP at the Jasper County Museum and Skiff Medical Center. Esther and Jay enjoyed going on road trips around the United States and traveling to Mexico. She doted on her only son, Troy, and loved spending time with him and his family.

Those left to honor Esther include her son, Troy (Lea) Morris of Altoona; grandchildren, Alexis (Drake) Geary, Lillian Morris and London Morris; her great-granddaughter, Lilith Geary; her step-children, Theckla Hendrickson, Tonya Roland, and Carolyn Lee Pomikal; step-grandchildren, Leslie Gilbert, Benjamin Avila, Jessie Hendrickson, and Jamie Hendrickson; several step-great-grandchildren; her sister-in-law, Rhonda Swaim; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Oris Swaim and Junia Gardner; husband, Jay in 2022; her siblings: Virgil Swaim, Loretta Smith, and John Swaim; and step-grandchildren, Casey and Kyle Roland.
