Betty Lou Owens, age 88 of Colfax, passed away on Friday, October 13, 2023 at Altoona Nursing and Rehab. The family will greet friends on Wednesday, October 18, 2023 from 5:00 - 7:00 pm at Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax. A memorial graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 21, 2023 at 10:30 am at McKeever Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of the Midwest and condolences may be left for the family at www.coburnfuneralhomes.com
The daughter of Warren Ayres and Opal (Storm) Cadman, Betty was born on December 21, 1934 in Valeria, Iowa. She graduated from Mingo High School in 1953. On January 16, 1954, she was united in marriage to Tom Owens. Betty worked at several restaurants in the area, including Pat and Mel’s. She also worked at Maytag in Newton and Van Dusseldorps. Betty was a people person. She was the first unofficial neighborhood watch commander in Colfax. She always knew what was happening in the neighborhood. When she wasn’t keeping tabs on the neighborhood, she enjoyed watching Jerry Springer and her tabloids. She enjoyed going on cemetery runs and drives in general with her twin sister, Barb Borts. Most of all, however, she loved the time that she spent with her grandchildren and their families.
Those left to honor her memory include her daughters, Vicki (Terry) Rector and Cindy (Mike) Cooper; a son Thomas “T.J.” (Barb) Owens, Jr; six grandchildren and many great and great great grandchildren. Also surviving is a sister-in-law, Virginia Woods and several nieces and nephews.
Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Tom in 2000; her twin sister, Barb Borts,, sister, Rena Martin and a brother, Bob Morton.
