1937-2022

Marilyn K. Murphy, 85, passed away September 3, 2022, at Brio in Johnston. A memorial gathering will begin at 2pm, Wednesday, September 7, 2022, at Iles Westover Chapel. A memorial service will follow beginning at 3pm. Private interment will be held at a later date.

Marilyn was born March 28, 1937, in Newton, Iowa to Paul and Helen Murdy. She graduated from Newton High School and Cornell College with a degree in Elementary Education. On December 27, 1958, she was united in marriage to Cleo Murphy at the Newton United Methodist Church. They made their home in Des Moines, where they raised their two children, Linda and Bruce.

Marilyn was a first grade teacher for Des Moines School Systems and later helped develop the Head Start Program in West Des Moines.

Marilyn was an active member of the Methodist Church. She was a past president of PEO, and involved with numerous chapters in each community she lived in. She loved spending time and traveling with her family. Her favorite places for vacationing were in Door County, Wisconsin and the beaches of Florida.

Marilyn and Cleo retired to Florida, where they lived for 15 years, returning to Des Moines in November 2018, residing at Brio in Johnston.

Marilyn is survived by her husband, Cleo; children, Linda (John) Waldron and Bruce (Kerrie) Murphy; grandchildren: Ashleigh Bunting, Laura (Craig) Thomson, Benjamin Freese, Meridith (Alex) McCarty, Carolyne Waldron, Branden (Brooke) Plummer, Lauren (Nic) Steckelberg, Luke Murphy and Courtney Murphy; 10 great grandchildren; and a sister, Lynette (Bob) Doyle.
