Passing of a Good Mother
Mary Nielson, daughter of Niels Christenson, was born in Denmark, June 10, 1864, and died at Kellogg, Iowa, December 13, 1919, at the age of seventy-five years, six months and three days. Her death followed an illness of eighteen months.
She was one of a family of four children, and early in life began to develop those traits of industry and frugality which enabled her to overcome later difficulties. The alluring stories of the great America finally determined her to leave the land of her birth and childhood and cross the great expanse of water.
Shortly after her arrival upon the shores of the land of her adoption she was married, October 14, 1871, to Hans Christenson, at Newton, Iowa. With hope and determination they settled upon a farm in jasper county, and shared all the hardships that were incident to the life of the early pioneer. Here they formed their friendships and accepted such share as Fortune had in store for the, and enjoyed mutual happiness until the husband was called to the Great Unknown on October 14, 1914.
To this union were born eight children, five of whom are still left to mourn the loss of a devoted mother, namely, Chris J., Fred, Ella C. Rogers, Caroline Singleton and Anna Rowley. Beside these, there are three grandchildren, Oda and Alberta Rogers and Jerrold Rowley.
She was baptized according to the faith, and teaching of the Lutheran church, July 7, 1844, and confirmed April 17, 1859. She was a devout follower of the teachings of her Saviour, and of her it may be appropriately said: “Servant of God, well done. Thy glorious warfare’s past, The battle's fought, the race is won, And thou art crowned at last.”
Funeral services were held at her late home on Monday, December 15, 1919 conducted by Rev. Ashley S. Farnham, pastor of the Christian church. Music was furnished by a quartette. Interment by the side of her husband in the Kellogg cemetery.
