Donavon Musgrove, 88, of Sully, passed June 10, 2023. Visitation will be 1-2 p.m., Thursday, June 15, at Sully First Reformed Church, followed by funeral at 2:30 p.m. The funeral will be livestreamed from the church’s website beginning at 2:30 p.m. Memorials have been designated for Sully Community Church Recreation Center.
His family includes his wife Audrey Musgrove of Sully; his two sons Brett Musgrove of Sully and Brad (Cindy) Musgrove of Reasnor and their family Natasha (John) Ripley, Brayden, and Nora and Nicolette (Jay) Mitchell, Baya, Amelle, and Hollyn.
Donavon Edward Musgrove was born June 6, 1935, to Leroy and Zelma (Holland) Musgrove in Keokuk County.
Don attended school in Thornburg and was a 1953 high school graduate. He went on to earn a degree in music at Coe College in Cedar Rapids.
Aug. 23, 1958, he was united in marriage to Audrey Van Dee in the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua.
Don was an instrumental music teacher and small business owner. He taught at Victor School 1957-1958 and at Lynnville-Sully School 1958-1974, and started a small business with Wilbur Vos in 1975 until retirement.
Some of his achievements were: Lynnville-Sully School Citizen of the Year 1988, Lynnville-Sully FFA Honorary Chapter Farmer 1990 and 1991, Lions Club International Melvin Jones Fellow Award 1999, and Lynnville-Sully Boosters Lifetime Achievement Award 2001. Don was a member of Sully Lions Club, charter member and one of the initial organizers of the Diamond Trail Golf Club, and on the board of directors of Sully Retirement Apartments.
In retirement, Don organized the Adult Sully Big Band, which continues to play for various activities in the area under the direction of Steve McCombs. Golf was a favorite pastime. He greatly enjoyed attending sons’, grand-daughters’, and even great-grand-children’s activities and loved them all.
Don was preceded in death by his parents.
