Woman, 68, Colfax, Dies
Peritonitis Caused Death of Mrs. E. A. Wheeler; Rites Tuesday.
Colfax, Ia. – Mrs. Elbert A. Wheeler, 68, died Sunday at 3:30 a.m. at Skiff Memorial hospital, where she had been a patient since Thursday. She submitted to an operation Saturday; peritonitis caused her death.
Funeral services are to be conducted at the Christian Church at Colfax Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock with burial in the Highland Cemetery at Colfax in the family lot.
Mrs. Wheeler is survived by her husband and four daughters, Mrs. Walter Coulter of Colfax, Mrs. W. C. Phillips of West Des Moines, Mrs. Carroll Mateer of Newton and Mrs. Ernest Hartnett of Colfax.
A son and daughter preceded her in death.
Mrs. Wheeler was an ardent worker in the Christian Church of which she was a member.

Mrs. E. A. Wheeler Died Sunday Following Operation
Funeral Services Held Tuesday Afternoon From Christian Church
Mrs. E. A Wheeler, 67, early resident of this city, died Sunday following a major operation, peritonitis being the immediate cause of her death.
Mrs. Wheeler had been a resident of Colfax since 1895 and was well known in the community.
Funeral services were conducted from the Christian church Tuesday afternoon with the Rev. A. A. Burr officiating.
Clara Belle Redding, daughter of Hezekiah and Almira Redding, was born in Marion County, Iowa, on the 9th day of February 1874 and passed from this life at the Skiff hospital in Newton at 2:30 o’clock on the morning of May 11, 1941. She was 67 years, 3 months and 2 days of age. The immediate cause of her death was peritonitis following a major operation.
Deceased grew to womanhood in Marion County and received her schooling in the public schools of that county. Later she taught school for a time.
On the 8th day of November, 1893, she was united in marriage with Elbert Wheeler at Knoxville, and about two years later came to Colfax and established a home where they have resided continuously until her passing. The Grim Reaper called her on Mother’s Day morning, and the “red” carnation that was to have been worn was changed to white.
Mr. and Mrs. Wheeler were the parents of six children. Two of whom, a son and daughter, having passed away in infancy. Those remaining to console the husband and father are, Irma A. Coulter, Colfax, Iowa, Vera Grace Phillips, West Des Moines, Iowa, Florence Mateer, Newton, Iowa, and Mary Hartnett of Colfax. There are seven grandchildren. There are also two half-brothers, Charles Lancaster of Marshalltown and John Lancaster of Harvey.
A host of friends and neighbors join today to express their heartfelt sympathy for those who are mourning the loss of a good wife and mother.
Mrs. Wheeler was a life-long member of the Christian Church and for a number of years has been very active in the Loyal Women’s Bible class of the Christian Bible school. Coupled with this her chief interest was in her home and family and her husband and children rise up today and call her blessed.
“There is no death; the stars go down To rise upon another shore. And bright in Heaven’s jeweled crown They shine forever more.”
Music was furnished by Mrs. Earl Plummer and Mrs. George Rinker with Mrs. Ruth Williams, accompanist.
Pall bearers were: E. S. Meckley, John Clippinger, R. E. Cummings, Frank Morgan, Richard and Vernon Schmitt. Honorary pall bearers were Jabez Axel and Andrew Denholm.
Interment in Highland cemetery.
