Burton Hurst, in his 76th year, died last Saturday at the residence of B. L. Logsdon, in this place, after an illness of only two days. The funeral was from the M. E. church on Tuesday afternoon, conducted by the pastor, and the interment, at the McKeever cemetery, was with the ceremonial of the G.A.R. Post, of which he has long been a member. Mr Hurst was a native of Putnam county, Indiana but came to Iowa in 1849, first stopping in Wapello county, whence, in 1850, he came to this county and located upon the farm three miles north of Colfax, which was thenceforth his home.
Just previous to his coming to Iowa deceased was united by marriage with Nancy A. Vowell; to them ten children were born, and eight are still living, as follows: Banister L., of Bandon, Oregon; Hiram N., of Maxwell, Iowa; Mrs. B. L. Logsdon, Mrs. U. G. Hickman, Mrs. R. Robertson, Miss Lettie Hurst, Grant and Sherman Hurst, all of Colfax.
Mr. Hurst’s life has been an active and useful one. For 46 years he had been an earnest and faithful member of the M.E. church and Sunday School; he served his country loyally during the war of the rebellion as a member of the 40th Iowa regiment, remaining to the end of the conflict and receiving an honorable discharge.
He was prominent in the public affairs of the neighborhood and county, having served creditably as township trustee and justice of the peace, also as a member of the board of supervisors. Only a few days previous to his death he had returned from attending the annual reunion of the Hurst family at Greencastle, Indiana, upon which trip he had been accompanied by his granddaughter, Miss Josie Logsdon, of this place. A long and useful life ended he has passed to his reward.
