Carrie Oral Leonard was born Feb. 22, 1883. Died June 6, 1918 after a few weeks illness. She was born and spent her life on the Ashton farm. Dec. 31, 1908 she was united in marriage with J. Pearl Miller. To this union one child was born.
She was a graduate of Collins High School, 1902 and taught in the rural schools one year. She studied music at Newton, at Drake and Highland Park and devoted many years to teaching. Carrie united with the Congregational church at Ashton Chapel in 1899 and was ever faithful to her church and S.S. work.
Besides the daughter, Martha Grace she leaves her father, Joe Leonard, one sister, Mary Leora Leonard and numerous other relatives and friends.
The funeral was conducted by her pastor Rev. B. L. Wiley at Ashton, Sunday, 2 p.m. A double quartette sang sweet songs, Chas. Baker and Charity Brom rendered solos effectively. A large crowd attended and the floral offering was beautiful.
Pall bearers were Chas. Maxwell, Wm. Crouch, Blaine and Ivan Mullihan. Interment was in the family lot beside the mother who died Nov. 17, 1908.
Those from a distance were Vera Thare, and Leon Will of Marshalltown, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Hauson of Nevada, Chas. Evans, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Angelo of Colfax, Mrs. James Stock, Mrs. George Millit, Miss Shriner, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Weston, Mr. and Mrs. Brom and Charity of Newton, and many from Baxter, Collins, Maxwell and other nearby places.
