Gladys Birchard rites Wednesday

Gladys Birchard, 85, Hillsboro, died July 3, 1993, at Tuality Community Hospital of complications from a recent stroke.

Graveside services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Fir Lawn Cemetery, with the Rev. Gene Upton officiating.

Interment in the cemetery will follow.

Mrs. Birchard was born July 25, 1907, in Newton, Iowa, one of eight children of Charles and Lena Brune Koppin. She was raised and educated in Iowa.

On March 24, 1934, she married Thomas Birchard in Iowa. The couple moved to the Portland area in 1942 to work in the shipyards. They lived in the St. John’s area until moving to the West Union area in 1951.

Her Husband died Sept. 15, 1971.

When her family was young, Mrs. Birchard was active in the West Union Community Club and had worked at the West Union School cafeteria for a time. Lately, she had volunteered at the Hillsboro Senior Center and on American Red Cross blood drives.

Mrs. Birchard enjoyed flowers, gardening, crocheting, reading, walking and baking.

Survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-laws, Phyllis Birchard, Aloha, Donna and Ivan Kistler, Florence, and Linda and Rob Liebenow, Aloha; and two sons and a daughter-in-law, Wayne and Phyllis Birchard, Milwaukie, Ore. and Dale Birchard, Hillsboro.

Also surviving are seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Esther Lincoln, Grinnell, Iowa, and Goldie Schnell, Newton, Iowa; and two sisters-in-law, Florence Koppin and Minnie Koppin, both of Newton, Iowa.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the Hillsboro Senior Center or a charity of choice.
