Judy Mohler, 78, of Jefferson, IA passed away on Wednesday, January 4, 2023 at Mercy One Hospital in Des Moines, IA.

Judith Eleanor Mohler was born March 27, 1944 while the family was living in Dunreath, IA to proud parents Carl Reeves and Florence Mae (Swanson) Mohler. Three years later, a little sister Carolyn joined the family. Judy grew up on a farm near Dunreath, IA in Red Rock Township in rural Marion County. Her family relocated to Monroe, IA in 1966 after the federal government purchased their home and farmland to construct the Red Rock Dam. She attended White Walnut Country School, then Monroe Community School, graduating in 1962. She attended Graceland College in Lamoni, IA, earning a B.A. degree in elementary education in 1966.

She accepted a teaching position in the fall of 1966 in the Yale-Jamaica-Bagley (YJB) School District, teaching third grade. YJB later reorganized into the Panorama School District. She continued teaching in that same district throughout her entire 36-year teaching career, retiring in 2002. In her retirement, Judy enjoyed working as a substitute librarian at the Jefferson Public Library and as a volunteer in the gift shop at Greene County Medical Center. She also enjoyed participating in church activities and doing things with her sister and close friends.

Judy loved reminiscing about times spent with her parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. She was a farm girl who learned to drive a tractor before a car, loved helping her father with chores, and continued to enjoy driving the country roads all her life to “check on the crops”. She loved to roam their family farm, finding and collecting arrowheads and other Native American artifacts.

The Mohler family went on many family vacations and took fishing trips to Canada. Judy continued to travel including trips to Michigan, Maine and a last vacation to Alaska with her sister Carolyn in 2014. After college, she spent a summer on an Indian reservation in Arizona as part of a church older youth group service project. This inspired Judy to include a unit on Native American culture every year with her third-graders.

Judy loved being a teacher and she also enjoyed a long retirement. She was content to sit in her favorite recliner, reading, doing word searches, taking naps with her little dog Molly, and watching TV with Marilyn. She enjoyed feeding the birds and sitting in her sunroom watching the deer and other wildlife as they passed through her tree-filled backyard. Judy’s favorite color was green. She was often seen driving around Jefferson in her green pickup truck, wearing her green cap and coat. Ever the teacher, her green truck also pulled the library float for many years in the annual Bell Tower Festival parade encouraging children to read over the summer months.

Judy will be remembered as a quiet, dependable, and faithful daughter, granddaughter, sister, niece, cousin and friend. She was a kind and patient teacher who truly cared for the education and well-being of her students. She enjoyed studying church history and shared the most beautiful sermon stories and prayers.

Judy was a lifelong member of The Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, now known as Community of Christ. She was an ordained elder in Community of Christ and served as the local congregational financial officer for many years.

Judy is survived by her beloved friend Marilyn Millard, Marilyn’s sister Jane, both of Jefferson, IA, their precious little dog Molly, and many other relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, sister Carolyn Mohler Bristow, brother-in-law Larry Bristow, grandparents, aunts and uncles, cousin Cathy Swanson Hedrick and her cousin Candy Swanson Lundy’s husband Keith Lundy.

Visitation will be Tuesday, January 10 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at Coburn Funeral Home, Monroe, IA. Her funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 11 at 10:30 a.m. at Monroe Community of Christ. Burial will be in the Silent City Cemetery in Monroe, IA, with lunch following at the church. Memorials are suggested to Jefferson Public Library, or the Jefferson or Monroe Community of Christ. Coburn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
