She came to Jasper county near Baxter when a child with her father’s family and has since resided in this part of the county.
She was united by marriage to John DeReus at Colfax, Iowa, March 2, 1893. To this union eight children were born - two daughters - Hazel and the tiny babe preceded her to the beyond. Mrs. DeReus was a faithful member of the M. E. church at Mingo, a good friend and neighbor and a devoted wife and mother. In the home her services will be especially missed.
The funeral was conducted at Ashton Chapel Sunday at 2 p.m., by Rev. Wm. Williams, of St. Charles, assisted by Rev. Griggsbe, of Mingo; music was furnished by a quartet of Mingo singers, M’mes Frey, Clarence Black, Messers. Roy Everett and Floyd Hulse with Mrs. W. F. Hay at the organ. A large concourse attended and many beautiful flowers were sent by sympathizing friends.
Interment was in the Ashton cemetery beside her children. The pallbearers were Joe Coughlin, Joe Leonard, Wm. Byal, Ed Borts, Sollie Adams and Coon Heberer. Friends from a distance were his aged father, Ara DeReus, Sr., Pella; brothers, Henry and wife, of Prairie City; Peter DeReus and family of Valeria; his sister, Mrs. Vrezier, of Otley; his brother-in-law, Mr. Honnel and daughter, of Reasnor, and sister-in-law, Mrs. Ara DeReus, Jr., and daughter, of Newton; her sisters, Mrs. Louiza McKee, of Nebraska; Mrs. Philip Schmidt and family, of Colfax; old friends, Geo.
