November 29, 1930 ~ December 25, 2022 (age 92)

JoAnn (Vance) Munger, 92, of Newton, died on Sunday, December 25, 2022, at MercyOne Johnston Hospice. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, December 30, at the First Presbyterian Church in Newton. The family will greet friends after the service and burial with a coffee time at the church. Memorials to the Jasper County Courthouse Lighting Fund may be left at the church the day of the service or at the Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory.

JoAnn, the daughter of Harry and Aneta (Gates) Vance, was born on November 29, 1930, in Newton. She graduated from Newton High School in 1949. Starting in high school until 1955, JoAnn worked in the Maytag Supply Department. On July 21, 1950, JoAnn was united in marriage with Marvin Munger at the First Presbyterian Church in Newton. In 1963, JoAnn began her career with the Newton Community Schools. She started as the secretary in the Food Service department and later moving to the Administration Building doing payroll until her retirement in 1994. JoAnn and Marvin loved to travel and took yearly trips to Hawaii in February and Branson in the fall beginning in 1994. Even following Marvin’s death in 2013, JoAnn continued to visit her home away from home in Hawaii until 2018.
She also was an avid reader.
JoAnn was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Eastern Star serving as Worthy Matron, and Jasper County Retired School Personal.

JoAnn is survived by her son, Steve (Marcia) Munger of Clive; grandchildren, Wes (Sara) Little of Grimes, Adam Little of Davenport, and Geoff Little of Minneapolis, Minnesota; her great-grandchildren, Hannah, Haydn, Eliott, and Owen; and sister-in-law, Dena Munger of Marshalltown. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Marvin Munger on March 20, 2013; and daughter, Vicki Scarbrough on October 25, 2003.
