Buckley, Joseph Hanawalt – 1858-1929

Joseph Hanawalt Buckley was born in the State of Illinois, January 14, 1858 and passed away April 3, 1929 at his home near Colfax, Iowa.
He was the son of William and Hannah Buckley. He was united in marriage to Susannah Alexander, on December 24th, 1884 and to this union five children were born of whom three survive; Mrs. Eva Kaldenberg, Mrs. Lena Blake and Raymond R. Buckley; one daughter Elizabeth died at 11 months and Ronald at the age of nine years.
He is also survived by ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and three brothers, George and Richard Buckley at West Liberty and Virgil Buckley of Muscatine.
Mr. Buckley joined the Methodist Episcopal Church when but a young man and had been a consistent Christian worker, acting for many years as Superintendent of the Sabbath School. The Church Workers when in his community made his house their home and always received a hearty welcome. He also was a member of the Woodman Lodge for 35 years.
He was ever ready to do a favor for a neighbor or to say a kind word for a friend. Having lived the greater part of his life in Jasper County, a large circle of friends are saddened today by the passing of this good man.
Those from a distance attending the funeral were: his brother George Buckley and daughter Mrs. Swearinger and family of West Liberty; his brother Richard Buckley and nephew Ray Buckley of West Liberty; his brother Virgil Buckley of Muscatine; Mr. and Mrs. Will Reese and daughter-in-law, Mrs. Rex Reese of Omaha, Nebr., Mr. and Mrs. George Reese of Davenport; Mrs. Fred Seeley of Woodbine and numerous relatives and friends from Des Moines and vicinity.
Funeral services were held April 5th at the Methodist Church with Rev. C. H. Hiller in charge. Burial was made at the McKeever cemetery.
