SULLY - Henry Vander Weerdt, 84, of Sully, died Tuesday, Oct. 16, at Westridge Nursing & Rehab Center in Knoxville.

His funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Friday at Sully Christian Reformed Church, the Rev. Lawrence J. Howerzyl officiating. Burial: Sully Cemetery. Memorials: Gideon's Living Memorial Bible Plan. Visiting hours are open today at Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home in Pella, with family present 6:30-8:30 p.m. today.

Henry Vander Weerdt was born Oct. 17, 1916, north of Lynnville to Gerrit and Josie Runia Vander Weerdt. He was educated at Taylor Country Grade School near Lynnville.

On Feb. 11, 1941, he married Cornelia Nikkel at the Sully Christian Reformed Church parsonage. Their son, Vernon Leo, was born April 13, 1944. They began farming on a farm rented by his parents north of Lynnville, then moved south of Sully where they lived four years until buying a farm near Killduff.

In 1978 they purchased his home farm north of Lynnville, where they continued farming until moving into Sully in 1998. Henry enjoyed attending farm sales and for the past 60 years had collected hammers. He had been president of the Sully Christian Grade School Board, and since February 1969 was active with Gideon's International. At present he was a member of the Grinnell Camp.

On July 29, he suffered s stroke and went to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, then transferred to Westridge Nursing & Rehab Center in Knoxville. He was a lifelong member of Sully Christian Reformed Church, where he had served as a deacon.

He is survived by his wife, Cornelia; their son and daughter-in-law: Vernon L. and Bonnie Van Maanen Vander Weerdt of Sully; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; his older identical twin brother and spouse, John and Elizabeth Nikkel Vander Weerdt of Pella; a younger brother and sister-in-law: Garrit and Isabelle Terlouw Vander Weerdt of Lynnville; his wife's siblings and spouses: Elizabeth (Nikkel) and John Vander Weerdt of Pella, Bernie and Lenora (Van Rees) Nikkel of Pella, John and Wilda (Vander Pol) Nikkel of Reasnor, Clarence Laverman of Sully, Lester and Marilyn (Ver Dught) Nikkel of Sully, Marcella (Nikkel) and Lester Laverman of Sully, and Linda (Nikkel) and Maurice Rozendaal of Lynnville.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister and brother-in-law: Anna and Garreth Hardeman; and a brother and sister-in-law: Brandt and Jennie Vertuin Vander Weerdt.

SULLY — Henry Vander Weerdt, 84, of Sully, died of complications of a recent stroke Tuesday, Oct. 16, at West Ridge Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Knoxville. Funeral services will be Friday at 1:30 p.m. at the Sully Christian Reformed Church in Sully.

Burial will be at Sully Cemetery. Van Dyk-Duven Funeral Home in Pella is handling arrangements. Friends may call today at the funeral home where family will be available from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Memorials will be accepted to the Gideon Living Memorial Bible Plan.

The son of Gerrit and Josie Runia Vande Weerdt, he was born Oct. 17, 1916, in Lynnville.

On Feb. 11, 1941, he married Cornelia Nikkel in Sully. He farmed in the Lynnville Sully and Killduff areas before moving to Sully in 1998.

He enjoyed collecting and restoring hammers and attending farm sales. He was a member of Sully Christian Reformed Church and Gideon's International.

Survivors include his wife; a son and daughter-in-law, Vernon and Bonnie of Sully; two brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Elizabeth of Pella and Garrit and Isabelle of Lynnville: four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded In death by his parents, a sister and a brother.
