WALNUT CREEK, Calif. — John K. Rucker, 54, of Walnut Creek, Calif., formerly of Newton, died of lung cancer Saturday, Aug. 13, 2005, at Bruns Hospice Facility in Alamo, Calif.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at Hamilton's Funeral Home in Des Moines. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from noon until the time of the service Saturday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society for Lung Cancer Research.

He was born Dec. 22, 1950, in Des Moines and lived in Newton for a short time. He earned his undergraduate degree from Drake University. He worked for Heald College in San Francisco, Calif., as a vocational rehabilitation specialist.

He is survived by a son, Phil of California; his mother, LaVena (Earl) Fries of Des Moines; a brother, Bob (Valerie) of California; a step-sister, Marcia (William) Reesink of Muscatine; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Kelly Rucker.
