James W. Smith, Jr., 82, passed away August 28, 2003 at Taylor House. Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Grandview Park Funeral Home, with burial at Vandalia Cemetery.
Jim was born in Murfreesboro, TN, grew up in Oklahoma and moved to Des Moines in 1939. He was a Navy veteran of WWII and worked as a dental tech at Beveridge Dental Crafts, retiring in 1985. Mr. Smith was an active member of the Church of Christ for many years and more recently he had been attending Capitol Hill Christian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Norma; son, Duane James Smith; daughters, Jennifer Warning, Cindy Carey, Beth Carey, Jeanette Vander Zyl and Dana Thompson; one brother; four sisters; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Visitation begins after 1 p.m. Monday at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 3 to 5 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Taylor house.
