Richard Wirts, 8, is Killed While Visiting on Farm near Red Oak
Richard Wirts, 8, the stepson of James Hannagan of Newton, was killed last Friday near Red Oak on the farm of an uncle, Walter Johnson, when he was dragged to his death by a mule.
The boy was visiting with his uncle on the farm and, with a neighbor boy, was taking a pair of mules to a neighboring farm. The Wirts boy, it was said, had tied the reins around his waist, and when the mule become frightened he was dragged to his death.
Mr. and Mrs. Hannagan and four year old son, Gene, also were visiting on the farm at the time, it was said, the family having left Newton Thursday morning to spend the Fourth and the weekend there. The family is not expected to return to Newton until Wednesday, according to word received by Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Fry, neighbors of the Hannagan family.
Funeral services, it was believed, would be held in Red Oak.
