Funeral Services For John E. Geisler Sr.
Pioneer Mingo Farmer Passed Away At His Home In Mingo
Funeral services were held Wednesday for John E. Geisler Sr., at Mingo. He was one of the pioneer farmers of that community.
John E. Geisler Sr., son of Henry and Helen Geisler, was born in Bloomington, Illinois, March 2, 1862, and quietly passed away at his home in Mingo, Ia., Dec. 23, 1934, aged 72 years, 9 months and 21 days.
He came with his parents in a covered wagon, when a lad, to Jasper county, where they made their home on a farm two miles west of Mingo.
He was united in marriage to Miss Catherine Enabnit, March 12, 1885. They were making plans to celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary next spring. To Mr. and Mrs. Geisler were born seven children, four boys and three girls, Rosa, Fred, John, Louis, Walter, Emma and Viola.
In young manhood, Mr. Geisler was converted and united with the Evangelical church at Zion of which church he remained a faithful and devout member until the close of life.
He leaves to mourn his going his life companion of nearly fifty years, his children, Mr. and Mrs. O. R. Jones of Menlo, Ia., Mr. and Mrs. Fred Geisler, Mr. and Mrs. John Geisler, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Geisler, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Geisler, Mr. and Mrs. Edd Hay, all of Mingo, and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Lozier of Los Angeles, Calif. All were present at their father’s bedside except Mr. and Mrs. Lozier, who were detained because of illness. Twenty-one grandchildren and many other relatives and friends survive.
He was a loving husband and father, never happier than when in his home surrounded by his family and friends. He was a generous and helpful neighbor, always glad when he had an opportunity to help.
(There was a poem but it was not transcribed to be included.)
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Engle, superintendent of the Evangelical churches of the Des Moines district, assisted by Rev. LaFavor, pastor of the Zion church, and Rev. Blevins and Rev. Simmons, Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. Music was furnished by a mixed quartette, Rev. LaFavor, Mrs. J. L. Hartley, Mrs. Marion Eubank and Floyd Hulse, accompanied by Mrs. L. L. Pickett at the piano. They sang “Face to Face” and “Abide With me.” Rev. LaFavor sang “Last Mile of the ay” and Mrs. Carrie Hays played a piano solo, “Jesus Paid It All.”
Pall bearers were six grandsons, Eldon Geisler, Gail Geisler, Bruce Jones, Milford Geisler, Teddie Hay and Harold Geisler. Interment was had in the Graham cemetery.
Out of town relatives present were Mr. and Mrs. Adam Kolb, Mrs. Lydia Wadingham of Meservey, Ia., Mr. and Mrs. John Kolb Jr. of Latimer, Ia., Bob Enabnit of Clear Lake, Ia., Chris Enabnit of Des Moines, and Rev. and Mrs. O. R. Jones and Louise and Bruce of Menlo, Ia.
Miss Helen Geisler, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Geisler of North Dakota, came too late for the funeral, being snow-bound in Minnesota.
